Youth Fishing School in Lapland (Ages 7–17)
Creating the next generation of anglers—one cast at a time

About This Experience
Fishing is about much more than catching fish. It's about respecting nature, developing patience, celebrating success and spending quality time outdoors. At our Youth Fishing School, young people aged 7–17 are introduced to the world of fishing in a safe and supportive environment with an experienced local guide. Throughout the day, participants learn the fundamentals of fishing, practice casting techniques, become familiar with fishing equipment and head out to catch Lapland's fish together. The most important moment isn't how many fish are caught—it's the smile that appears when the very first fish is landed. Learn to fish the right way from the very beginning The fishing school is designed for complete beginners as well as young anglers with some previous experience. During the day, participants will learn about: safe fishing on the water using fishing equipment choosing the right lures casting techniques fish behaviour responsible fishing and respect for nature Instruction is tailored to each participant's skill level. The goal is for every young angler to gain confidence, enjoy success and develop a lifelong interest in fishing. Learning in the heart of nature The fishing school takes place in Lapland's beautiful rivers and lakes, where nature provides the perfect outdoor classroom. Participants learn to identify fish species, observe their surroundings and understand how seasons, weather and water conditions affect fishing. At the same time, they enjoy an unhurried day outdoors. Fresh northern air. The sound of flowing water. Soft drinks surrounded by nature. These experiences inspire many young anglers to continue fishing for years to come. Small groups for personal instruction The fishing school is conducted in small groups, ensuring every participant receives plenty of individual guidance. The guide has time to teach, encourage and help each young angler succeed at their own pace. Fishing equipment can be provided if needed, so participants only need weather-appropriate clothing and an eagerness to learn. Service provider This experience is operated by Jänkäkoira, a local Lapland fishing and outdoor company whose guides have introduced hundreds of young people to fishing on the waters of Lapland. Safe instruction, genuine local expertise and an encouraging teaching style make this fishing school an experience that can spark a lifelong passion for fishing.

Frequently asked questions
Turvallisuus on retken tärkein lähtökohta. Pienryhmät mahdollistavat henkilökohtaisen ohjauksen ja jatkuvan valvonnan koko kalastuskoulun ajan.

The Man Who Knows These Rivers by Heart Your guide is Junnu Korpela, a certified fishing and wilderness guide who has spent a lifetime exploring the waters of Finnish Lapland. Based near Pyhätunturi, Junnu knows the Kemijoki river system in a way that only decades of experience can teach. Every season, every change in water level, every shift in the weather has become part of his knowledge. He knows where the trophy pike spend the winter, when the first grayling begin to rise in spring, and how wind, current and light influence the fish on any given day. His understanding of these rivers comes not from maps or books, but from a lifetime lived on the water. More Than a Fishing Guide A day with Junnu is about much more than catching fish. He is a natural storyteller whose passion for Lapland is as memorable as the fishing itself. Throughout the trip, he shares local legends, stories of remarkable catches, and insights into how the Kemijoki and its surrounding waters have shaped the lives of the people who have lived here for generations. Along the way, you'll also learn to read the water, understand fish behaviour, and see the Arctic landscape through the eyes of someone who truly belongs here. Time seems to slow down on the river, turning every trip into something far richer than a fishing excursion—an authentic journey into Lapland's nature, history and traditions. Experience You Can Put Into Practice Junnu became a certified wilderness guide in 2022, but his knowledge has been built over decades on these waters. He has guided everyone from families and first-time anglers to experienced international fishermen searching for trophy pike and grayling. Whatever your experience level, he adapts each trip to suit the group, ensuring that everyone leaves with new skills, greater confidence and unforgettable memories. His years working with international visitors in Lapland's tourism industry have also given him an exceptional ability to make guests from around the world feel welcome from the very first moment. What You Can Expect With Junnu as your guide, you'll benefit from local knowledge that no map, guidebook or online video can provide. Every recommendation is based on years of observing how fish behave throughout the changing seasons, water levels and weather conditions. You'll learn practical fishing techniques that you can continue using long after your trip has ended. Rather than simply showing you where to cast, Junnu explains why fish behave the way they do and how experienced local anglers make their decisions on the water. Just as importantly, you'll enjoy the calm, unhurried atmosphere that defines every outing. There's no rush—only time to fish, learn, listen and enjoy one of Finland's most beautiful wilderness environments. Many guests leave remembering the stories every bit as much as the fish they caught. Through Junnu's storytelling, Lapland comes alive—its mythology, history, traditional beliefs and modern culture blending into an experience that stays with you long after you return home. Safety Always Comes First Years on the water have taught Junnu how to anticipate changing weather and river conditions long before they become a concern. Every trip is carefully planned with safety as the highest priority. Appropriate safety equipment is always carried on board, insurance is in place, and every decision is made according to current conditions so you can relax and enjoy your day with complete peace of mind.
