About This Experience

Latvalinnustus (literally "treetop hunting") is the ancient Finnish practice of finding grouse species at their dawn roost and luring them into range using calls and patience. The technique demands quiet movement through forest, an intimate understanding of bird behaviour, and pinpoint accuracy. Your guide begins scouting the evening before, marking fresh droppings and roost feathers in the lichen-draped old-growth forests around Sodankylä. The pre-dawn start (typically 4 am) takes you by ATV along forest roads before heading on foot — or, for participants with limited mobility, remaining at a pre-selected vehicle-side calling point where the guide brings the birds close. The guide handles all calling and decoy work; your role is to watch, wait and shoot when the moment is right. All legal quarry species may be taken; a Finnish hunting licence is required and can be arranged on request. The day includes a full field breakfast cooked over an open fire deep in the forest, and proper game handling is demonstrated.
