How to Get a Fishing Permit for Private Waters in Finland

Finland has over 188,000 lakes and thousands of private rivers — but you need the right permit to fish most of them. This guide explains the Finnish permit system and how to buy one online in minutes.

Public vs. Private Waters in Finland

Finland distinguishes between public (state-owned) and private waters. Many of Finland's most productive lakes and rivers are privately owned by fishing cooperatives, landowners, or clubs. To fish these, you need a kalastuslupa (fishing permit) directly from the owner or through a service like WildAccess.

For state-owned waters, a national fishing management fee (kalastuksenhoitomaksu) and a lure fishing licence are sufficient. But for private waters — which include many of the best trophy fishing spots — you need a separate permit.

Types of Fishing Permits Available

  • Day permit (päivälupa) — valid for one calendar day. Ideal for a one-off trip.
  • Weekend permit (viikonloppulupa) — valid Friday–Sunday. Great for a short trip.
  • Week permit (viikkolupa) — valid for 7 consecutive days.
  • Season permit (kausilupa) — valid for the full fishing season. Best value for regular anglers.

How to Buy a Fishing Permit Online

  1. Visit WildAccess Fishing and browse private areas.
  2. Select your area, permit type, and date.
  3. Pay securely — your digital permit arrives by email immediately.
  4. Show the permit code at the water's edge if requested by an inspector.

Do You Still Need the National Fishing Fee?

Yes. Even with a private permit, anglers aged 18–64 must pay the national fishing management fee (€12/year or €5/7 days) and, if using lures, the lure fishing right fee. These are paid at eraluvat.fi. WildAccess permits cover the private area access — the national fee is separate.

Top Species on Private Waters

  • Pike (hauki) — Finland's most abundant predator fish, found in almost every lake.
  • Perch (ahven) — great for beginners and experienced anglers alike.
  • Trout & salmon (taimen/lohi) — prized trophy fish in rivers and stocked lakes.
  • Zander (kuha) — a Finnish favourite, especially in evening trolling.
  • Arctic char (nieriä) — found in deep Lapland lakes.
