Joining an Elk Hunt as a Guest in Finland: Everything You Need
Elk hunting (hirvijahti) is one of Finland's most celebrated autumn traditions. And thanks to the guest permit system, you don't need to be a club member to take part. Here's how it works.
What Is the Finnish Elk Hunting System?
Finnish hunting clubs manage large private forest areas under annual elk quotas issued by the Finnish Wildlife Agency (Suomen riistakeskus). Each club receives a certain number of elk tags per season. Clubs can sell guest hunting permits (vierasjahtilupia) that allow non-members to join hunts within the club's quota.
What Licence Do You Need?
To hunt elk as a guest in Finland, you need:
- A valid hunting licence from Finland or an accepted equivalent from your home country
- Firearms competency — most clubs require guests to declare they are competent with the firearm they intend to use
- Game insurance — mandatory for all hunters in Finland
- The WildAccess guest permit — your digital day permit for the specific area
What Does an Elk Hunt Day Look Like?
Elk hunts in Finland are typically driven hunts (ajojahti) where dogs push elk through the forest while hunters wait at pre-assigned stands. The hunt master coordinates the drive and stand assignments. As a guest, you will be assigned a stand and briefed on safety protocols before the hunt begins.
- Start time: typically 7–8am at the meeting point
- Duration: a full day hunt runs until early afternoon
- Equipment: high-visibility orange vest required; bring your own firearm and ammunition in calibres suitable for large game (minimum .30 cal equivalent)
Can Foreigners Buy Elk Hunt Permits?
Yes. International visitors can purchase guest hunting permits through WildAccess provided they hold a recognised hunting licence. Most EU hunting cards are accepted. Non-EU visitors should contact WildAccess support to confirm eligibility before booking.
